Answer:

In my opinion, driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation for few reasons.

First, driving a car is more convenient. I can start from my home at any time to office or any place at my convenience. I don’t need to start as per the public transportation schedule. For example, my friend travels by public transportation to his office. He always says that it is difficult for him to keep up with the schedule of the bus. At times, he misses the bus and has to wait for the next bus. He also told me that sometimes, he runs to catch the bus. On the other hand, I never had this problem of reaching late to the destination, as I always drive my car to reach any place. Another example, my cousin lives in Chicago, Illinois. He uses public transportation and complained that he literally struggles using public transportation as the climate is very cold and windy there. He said that he wears 3 or more clothing to keep himself warm. He thinks that the public transportation is troublesome, whenever there is a lot of rain and harsh cold climate.

Second, if we drive a car to any place, it saves a lot of time. If we travel by public transportation, we need to wait for the connecting bus or train. At times the bus or train may run late and which will add on to the traveling time. For example, I drove to my friend’s birthday party a month ago from my Edison, New Jersey to Jersey City, New Jersey. It took almost 45 minutes to reach to my friend’s home. On contrary, my friend also travelled to the same birthday party by public transportation and it took one and a half hour for him to reach the party. He informed us that he has to catch a connecting bus and that made him late.

For the above said reasons and examples, I think that driving a car is more comfortable than traveling by public transportation.

Hi Rakeshchanda, I thought your writing was quite good. You have some very detailed examples that do a good job of supporting your arguments. Your body paragraphs flow well, but adding a short conclusion sentence to each body paragraph tying the example back to the thesis would be good. Also, your intro and conclusion are very short. Here is a good format for a short introduction.
1st: state that the topic is important
2nd: explain why it’s important
3rd: restate the question
4th: present your answer (thesis statement)
Your writing is clear and easy to understand, though you do have a few errors in usage and grammar here and there, plus a few missing words.
Overall, I think I would rate this a 3.5 out of 5, though with a better intro I would say a 4 out of 5.

Answer:

In my opinion, driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation for [several] reasons. {"few" means not very many - it is different than "a few"} {this thesis statement is ok, but you need a longer introduction}

First, driving a car is more convenient. I can start from my home at any time[ and travel] to office or any [other] place at my convenience. I don’t {avoid contractions} need to start{"do not need to coordinate my trip as per" is better} as per the public transportation schedule. For example, my friend travels by public transportation to his office. He always says that it is difficult for him to keep up with the schedule of the bus. {"up with the bus schedule" is better} At times, he misses the bus and has to wait for the next bus. He also told me that sometimes, he runs {"he is forced to run to catch" is better here} to catch the bus. On the other hand, I never had this problem of reaching [my destination] late , as I always drive my car to reach any place. {this last phrase sounds a bit unnatural} {I would add "As" here} Another example, my cousin lives in Chicago, Illinois. He uses public transportation and complained that he literally struggles [with] using public transportation as the climate is very cold and windy there. He said that he wears 3{write out numbers less than 20) or more [layers of] clothing to keep himself warm. He thinks that the public transportation is troublesome, whenever there is a lot of rain and harsh cold [weather]. {the climate doesn't really change - in Chicago it is "temperate continental" all year long}

Second, if we drive a car to any place, it saves a lot of time. If we travel by public transportation, we need to wait for the connecting bus or train. At times the bus or train may run late[,] which will add on to the traveling time.{"travel time" is more natural} For example, I drove to my friend’s birthday party a month ago from my [home in] Edison, New Jersey to Jersey City, New Jersey. It took almost 45 minutes to reach my friend’s home. On contrary, {"In contrast" is better here} my friend also travelled to the same birthday party by public transportation and it took one and a half hour[s ] for him to reach the party. He informed us that he ha[d ] to catch a connecting bus and that made him late.

For the above said reasons and examples, I think that driving a car is more comfortable than traveling by public transportation. {this conclusion is a bit too short also}

Dear Lushen:

Thanks so much for rating my independent writing task 2.

As per your suggestions, I have modified my introduction and conclusion. Please let me know if they are correct.

Introduction:

Transportation is very important aspect in our life. Everyone has a different choice and opinion for their personal reasons. In my opinion, driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation for several reasons like comfort and travel time.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, there are pros and cons for each and every type of transport modality. I think driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation as it is more convenient and time saving.

Hi this introduction is better, but you could still improve step 2, explaining why it is important.

Maybe something like this:

1st: state that the topic is important: Of the many decisions we face each day, figuring out how to get from point A to point B is one of the more important.
2nd: explain why it’s important: As our cities and suburbs continue to grow, traveling for work or leisure takes up more and more time, so figuring out the most efficient method to get around is critical.
3rd: restate the question: In a modern society, we have many modes of transportation to choose from, including public transportation like busses and subways, as well as privately owned automobiles.
4th: present your answer (thesis statement): In my opinion, driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation for several reasons, including increased comfort and reduced travel time.

Here is a good format for a conclusion:

1st: restate your answer
2nd: restate your reasons
3rd: provide a final suggestion

You might improve your conclusion by adding a final suggestion or call to action:

In conclusion, although there are pros and cons for each and every type of transport modality, I think driving a car is much more comfortable than traveling by public transportation. Using ones own automobile is much more convenient and saves valuable time. If the financial resources are available, I think everyone should definitely consider purchasing their own car to fill their travel needs.

A big part of the TOEFL score depends on word count, so if you have time, expanding your example in your second body paragraph or adding an additional reason/body paragraph would boost your score.

Could anybody check my essay? I have used some expressions and phrasal verbs which I hope fit in the context.
Thank you ^^

These days, more and more people are using their own cars to commute. The high levels of pollution found in the air may have something to do with the increasing number of vehicles in our cities. When faced with taking private cars or public transport people react in different ways. I will discuss for and against arguments about using either private cars or public transport in this essay.

Some people prefer use private cars to public transport for several reasons. First, they think that private cars are faster than public transport since you don’t have to spend your priceless time waiting for the bus under a bus-shelter crammed with people. Second, you can go from work to home directly without stopping time and time again picking people up. On the other hand, there are people who don’t like to share room with unknown persons and they don’t like standing up during the trip. Take buses as examples. In rush hours, it is very difficult to find any seat left and eventually you end up grasping a hand bar and trying to keep your balance to not be flung when the bus brakes.

There are other people who prefer public transport to private cars. In my view, public transport is cheaper than using our own cars. Ask people who use private cars on a regular basis how much money they spend on their cars every month. Not to mention the price of the parking and fuel or the expense produced when you take your car to the garage to have it repaired. Unlike private cars, public transport has got reserved lanes in many cities so long delays due to traffic congestion can be avoided using a bus or a taxi. In these cities public transport makes for faster than private cars. As for as environment is concerned the use of public transport instead of private cars makes a difference. For instance, if the people who use a bus used their own vehicles instead of, it would be the equivalent to 60 cars producing fumes.
In conclusion, using private cars is expensive and produces more pollution on atmosphere than public transport. All in all, public transport is probed to be more efficiency and cheaper than private cars. For this reason, I feel that we all should try to use public transport whenever it is possible because is beneficial for your economy, your time and environment.
