I.        Read the following passage carefully:


1)      Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847. He was one of seven children. When he was a child, he had a lot of illnesses. Thomas Edison also had hearing problems. His mother spent a lot of time worrying about him. As a result, he did not get to enjoy the same things as other kids his age. Instead of going to school, his mother taught him at home. He also taught himself how to read and write. When he was not doing school work, he liked to figure out how things worked. He did not let his illnesses or being nearly deaf bother him. In fact, he liked being almost deaf because he said he could sleep better and work with less noise to distract him.

2)      Thomas Edison was a very hard worker. When he was 12, he started selling books, newspapers and candy on a local train. If he was not busy selling items, he would read the books and magazines. This helped him become smarter. Soon he started opening newspaper stands in his own town. Instead of working at the newspaper stands himself, Thomas Edison hired other kids to work for him. He even published his own newspaper when he was a teenager. He used his profits to build a small science lab in a baggage car.

3)      Once, while working in his lab, Thomas Edison saw a child wander onto the railroad tracks. He saved the child and, as a reward, was offered a job working for a telegraph company. The job gave Thomas Edison the chance to start travelling around the country. As he travelled, he learned more about the way things worked and got new ideas. Those ideas inspired him to create new things and he became known as one of the greatest inventors of all time.

1.1.            On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions: (7 Marks)

II.      Read the following passage carefully: ( 8 Marks)

Why Do Dogs Bury Their Bones?

1.      It may seem crazy when you watch your dog bury his favorite bone or chew toy, only to dig it up a day or two later, but there is actually a reason behind why dogs bury their bones - it is simply in their nature. For thousands of years, dogs have buried their bones. The practice itself started long before dogs were even pets when their ancestors had to bury bones to survive.

2.      When dogs lived in the wild, sometimes food was scarce. If they were able to find meat and bones, dogs became very protective of it. Sometimes they would have more meat than they could eat for one meal. To keep other dogs and animals from stealing their meat, dogs would bury it in the ground. When it was time for the next meal, they would dig up their bones and enjoy them again. This would continue until the meat and bones were gone.

3.      Even though most dogs have plenty of food to eat today, their instincts still tells them to bury their bones and favorite toys. They do this to keep other dogs and animals from stealing them, just like their ancestors did. Some dogs hide more than one bone at once, burying one so they can go dig up another. This can leave a backyard full of holes and, well, bones.

4.      So how do dogs decide where to bury their bones? A dog cannot bury a bone just anywhere. No, he must first find the perfect spot. This involves using his nose to sniff out a spot that is free from predators. Often it is near a tree or a large rock, but it could be virtually anywhere in the yard. Once the dog finds the perfect spot, he uses his front paws to dig the hole, drops in the bone and covers up the hole to protect his treasure.

5.      Unfortunately, even when dogs bury their bones near a special tree or mark their territory, they do not always remember where a bone is buried. Thankfully, dogs have an impeccable sense of smell. A dog can smell a bone even if it has been buried for years and dig it up. Most of the time, dogs find bones they have buried on their own, but they can also find bones buried by other dogs. To the dog, whatever he finds is a treasure.

IV.   Develop the hints and write a story. Also give a title to the story.  ( 8 marks)

V.     The following passage has not been edited. There is an error in each line, which has been underlined. Write the error and the correction in your answer sheets. One has been done as an example. (3 Marks)
